The Story Behind Inner Critic Office Hours
Over the past five years, I’ve led virtual workshops for undergrads, graduate students, and mid-career professionals through Harvard University’s Counseling and Mental Health Service. Titles like Overcoming Perfectionism Through Self-Compassion, Befriending the Inner Critic, Being Well, and Courage, Presence & Resilience (CPR) drew participants from all over the world.
Regardless of workshop theme, background or age, a common challenge emerged:
Harsh inner narratives and a crushing fear of not being good enough.
After the formal workshops ended, many participants would linger—too embarrassed to share their questions in the main session. But once they did, they discovered others had the exact same worries:
“I’m not good enough.”
“Everyone else knows what they’re doing and I have no clue.”
“I tricked people into thinking I belong here.”
“I can’t finish anything. I’m spinning in place.”
“The standard is impossibly high. I’m unproductive, and still my inner critic won’t let up.”
“I was always compared to my siblings.”
“I’ve had to be my own harshest critic just to survive.”
And ironically, by sharing their inner critic’s voice out loud, they began to address the very fear that made them feel so exposed in the first place: the fear of judgment.
Over time, I began calling this extra space “office hours”—a casual, optional time to ask questions, get clarity, or simply feel less alone.
That experience inspired the creation of my book The Perfectionist’s Dilemma, and now, this new offering. 🎉
What to Expect in Inner Critic Office Hours
If you’ve ever thought:
“I just want to get rid of this voice.”
“I try to ignore it, but it keeps roaring back.”
“This part of me is mean. Why would I nurture it?”
You’re not alone. And that resistance? It’s often a protective part trying to do damage control.
Our goal isn’t to silence the inner critic. It’s to bring curiosity, compassion, and even a little humor to it.
Here’s the basic challenge each month:
💛 Notice the inner critic
💛 Name the inner critic
💛 Nurture the inner critic
It may sound strange—but it works. This isn’t therapy, but it’s a form of guided inquiry informed by in Internal Family Systems or “parts work,” minfulness, and self-compassion. (If you're looking for a therapist, please seek someone licensed in your location.)
You’ll be invited to bring your inner critic—what I affectionately call your “Plus One”—and begin a new kind of relationship with it. (You may have a few inner critics, too. That’s normal.)
