When I wrote The Perfectionist’s Dilemma, I had to confront my own perfectionist tendencies. The nagging voice whispered: Is this good enough? Will anyone even care? Am I offering anything new? But the loudest fear was rooted in an old criticism from a PhD advisor who once called me a “flake” for exploring mindfulness as an intervention. Fast forward two decades—mindfulness is now mainstream and evidence-based—yet that same judgmental voice lingers:

Maybe I’m the type of person who likes pushing boundaries. What I do know for sure is that people love learning simple (if sometimes unconventional) ways to calm their nervous system—without having to “reframe” thoughts, “witness” thinking,” or “shift mindsets.” While those approaches have their place, they often keep people stuck in their heads rather than grounded in their hearts and bodies.
I know the value of going off-script in my field because I see real results:
A student emailed with the subject line: “TAPPING WORKS!!!” (after trying everything else).
A mindfulness group participant with a racing mind found that holding two acupressure points for a few minutes eased his anxiety immediately.
A client saved a childhood photo on her phone’s screensaver to give her younger self a daily dose of compassion—and that simple gesture sparked big shifts in her life.
Lived experience is the best evidence that something is working.
